SNMP is specifically designed for use in IP network management network nodes (servers, workstations, routers, switches, and HUBS, etc.) of a standard protocol, it is an application layer protocol. SNMP enables network administrators to manage network performance, discover and solve network problems, and plan network growth. SNMP receives random messages (and event reports) from the network management system to learn of network problems.

SNMP is the predecessor of simple gateway monitoring protocol (SGMP), which is used to manage communication lines. Subsequently, SGMP has been greatly modified, especially by adding SMI and MIB that conform to the definition of Internet. The improved protocol is known as SNMP. The framework of SNMP network management based on TCP/IP is the current standard in the industry. It consists of three main parts, namely, SMI (Structure of Management Information), MIB (management Information base) and SNMP (management protocol).
SMI defines the organization and identity of the information used by the SNMP framework, and provides templates for the MIB to define and use managed objects.
The MIB defines a collection of managed objects that can be accessed through SNMP.

SNMP protocol is an application layer protocol that defines how network managers read and write MIB objects of agent processes.

MIB in SNMP is a kind of tree database, the Object managed by MIB is the end node of the tree, and each node has a unique location and unique name.

An SNMP managed network consists of the following three key components: Network management systems (NMS, network-management systems), Managed devices, agent.

The network management system runs the application that monitors and controls the devices being managed. Also known as a management entity, this is where network administrators interact with network devices. Network management system provides a lot of computing and memory resources for network management. A managed network may have more than one network management system.

The managed device is a network node that contains an SNMP agent that exists on the managed network. Managed devices collect and store management information through the management information base (MIB) and enable the network management system to obtain this information through the SNMP agent.
An agent is a network management software module that exists in a managed device. The agent controls the management information of the local machine and transmits this information in a format compatible with SNMP.

SNMP is the communication protocol between management process (NMS) and Agent. It provides a standardized management framework for monitoring and managing devices in a network environment, a common language for communication, and corresponding security and access control mechanisms. Network administrator can query device information, modify device parameter value, monitor device status, automatically discover network fault, generate report, etc.
SNMP has the following technical advantages:

UDP is the standard protocol based on TCP/IP Internet.
Automated network management. Network administrators can use SNMP platform to retrieve information, modify information, find fault, complete fault diagnosis, capacity planning and report generation.

Shield the physical differences of different equipment, realize the automatic management of products from different manufacturers. SNMP only provides the most basic set of functions, making management tasks relatively independent from the physical characteristics and actual network types of managed devices, so as to realize the management of devices from different manufacturers.

The simple request-reply mode is combined with the active notification mode, with timeout and re-transmission mechanism.

There are few types of messages, and the message format is simple, convenient to analyze and easy to implement.

The version of Pv3 provides authentication and encryption security, as well as user and view-based access control to enhance security.

E-Lins 4G router can all support SNMP function. They are compact, ruggedized 3G/4G/LTE cellular networking solution designed for mission-critical connectivity in the most challenging environments. It is qualified for M2M (Machine to Machine), IoT (Internet of Things) and In-Vehicle applications. Super mini size suitable for embedding applications.

They are widely used in more than twenty industrial fields, such as CCTV security surveillance, AMR, vehicle, retails, vending machines, power control, water schedule, traffic, oil field, weather forecast, environmental protection, street lamp control, post, bank and many other fields.
All E-Lins communication terminals can be connected to the E-Lins remote managing and controlling platform (NMS), which brings the generous devices scattering in different areas to carry out concentrate monitor, configuration, updated, diagnose, maintenance, manage and control. Highly reduce the maintenance costing in the operator, integrator, devise supplier etc, increase the managing efficiency.
